Abstract

The accelerated growth of digital technologies has fundamentally altered how organizations communicate with customers, create value, manage relationships, and compete in increasingly dynamic markets. The development of digital marketing has come a long way. It was believed as an assortment of online promotional methods. Now it has become a strategic capability. This involves social media, content marketing, search engine marketing, mobile applications, electronic customer relationship management, personalization and many more. These developments have significantly altered customer expectations and increased the importance of customer experience, trust, engagement, satisfaction, and long-term relationship quality. This paper takes a critical look at the impact of digital marketing on customer loyalty and competitive advantage, through an extensive review and conceptual synthesis of the marketing literature. The theories explaining mechanisms through which digital marketing capabilities may affect customer outcomes and firm performance are relationship marketing theory, customer loyalty theory, customer experience theory, and the resource-based view of the firm. According to this study, a brand’s digital marketing does not create loyalty on its own. Its impact depends on the ability of the organization to provide relevant value, personalize communication, deliver consistent experience, build trustworthy interaction, provide responsive service and meaningful engagement across the digital touchpoints. Customer experience, satisfaction, trust, engagement and perceived value are therefore identified as significant mediating mechanisms between digital marketing activities and customer loyalty. Repeat purchase, retention, advocacy, customer lifetime value, and competitive advantage are the results of customer loyalty. Moreover, the paper argues that the embedding of digital marketing capabilities within organizational resources, knowledge, data infrastructure, customer relationships and organizational learning is more likely to result in sustainable competitive advantage than using them only as a promotional tool. The research ends with a unified conceptual framework, proposition on research, the implication for manager, research gaps, as well as future empirical investigations
